Stone Doll

Girl child

on our wedding day
I had a stone doll
wrapped in a cloth
we used sweet wrappers
to decorate a branch
for our Christmas tree
mamma did not have money
for non essential things
raising her ten children alone
I asked her what she wanted
for her fiftieth birthday
A barbie party was the answer
She was a child at heart
she loves children
and I understood
I chose her as my
life partner
because of that
so i started planning
roped in my daughters
and swore them into secrecy
a barbie party of note
she would have.
I asked friends and family
to give only Barbie Dolls
as presents
We would donate them
to the Children of Makaus
an Informal settlement
I commissioned a digital painting
themed African Queen barbie
depicting her
She always wished for a real doll
as a little girl in rural KZN
I would create one
in her image

She will have her Barbie party
and all the Barbie dolls
a little girl could wish for
and i knew she would donate them
she always gives little girls dolls
once like the ones she wished for
when she was a little girl.
so now I give to you
The African Queen cosmetic range
starting with this label
a new venture in the small
business we built from
the ground up
The method in my madness
is revealed

I  live my dreams
and I am happy to have
a little girl
to hold my hand
to creep into my heart
Moses loved his Little Bird
I love my African Queen
